Perth, the capital of Australia, is the largest city in the country and hosts some of the best beaches for surfing–if you know where to find them. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned surfer, there’s a range of spots to choose from. Perth’s shorelines stretch from the North to the South and extending to Rottnest Island, giving optimal variation in surf conditions to suit every surfer. Here are the top 5 coolest surf spots in Perth.
- Scarborough Beach
Scarb’s stretch of golden shores gives way to a beautiful sandy bottom blue ocean. Located 2o minutes north of Perth, the proximity is perfect for Perth residents–and also because it’s convenient, it’s often crowded. To avoid crowds and get the friendly beginner waves, it’s best to go in early mornings or late afternoons.
This is a quieter and less crowded alternative. Just 25 minutes south of Perth, waves reach 1m heights here, friendly enough for beginners and a slow ride for those looking for a chill surf. Free parking is available and plenty of grassy area for some sunbathing after riding the waves.
- Cottesloe Beach
Cottesloe beach is located 9 km from Perth. It’s well known for its variety in sports activities and plenty of extra space for hanging out after a surf. The beach is well protected by break walls from the South West winds. The best breaks can be found on the south of the Arch monument.
- Trigg Beach
Trigg is just 14 km from Perth and it’s a surf location that offers consistent surf breaks. It’s got a number of surf schools in the area and more daring waves off the break for more advanced surfers. With waves breaking both left and right, surfers can enjoy the tide at all stages. Wintertime is the best time to surf at Trigg with winds coming from the east and the optimum swell angle coming from the west to the southwest. Because it’s a great spot, it’s often crowded! But hey, go make friends.
- Leighton Beach
Leighton carries a calm and relaxed feel, perfect for a weekend away from the bustle of the city. When swells are headed North West, the bank makes excellent right waves. Waves here hit an average of 1m and occasionally higher ones can be found up north past Mosman beach. During the winter months, surfers can take advantage of challenging winds or switch over to kitesurfing.
